In Video: Fibre Networks as the Backbone of Education
John Henry Group has enjoyed a historic relationship with the University of Cambridge’s Information Services (UIS) department for nearly a decade.
John Henry Group has been the chosen construction partner for the institution’s Granta Backbone Network (GBN), a private 65km network stretching through the historic city of Cambridge, connecting together the colleges and research buildings that make up the University’s world-class footprint.
The concept of the Granta Backbone Network (GBN) was first talked about in 1989 but was officially launched in the 1990s by Dr David Hartley, a former Mathematics and Computer Science expert who had studied at Clare College.
Dr Hartley’s vision for a private communications network which would support the university’s telecoms footprint has today evolved into a world-class private fibre network, which is currently supporting world-class, influential research being carried out at the University Of Cambridge.
Discover our film about how the University of Cambridge is capitalising on next generation pure fibre networks to support ground-breaking medical and scientific research.
